I’ve made no secret of the fact that I suffer from depression, anxiety, and an eating disorder. One of the biggest things I have discovered about myself in recent months is that being surrounded by clutter can completely overwhelm me and send me into a downward spiral, and keeping around old clothes that I’d have to lose or gain weight to fit into again does nothing but trigger my disordered eating habits and make me feel miserable. So what’s the point of keeping those things around?
I was a bit nervous of getting rid of so many things that, in some way or another, I had a sentimental attachment to, but I’m here to tell you that minimizing everything in my home is one of the best things I have ever done for myself and my mental health. Now the only items around me are either practical or make me happy, and the same goes for my clothes. I reduced my makeup down to a single small bag since I no longer wear a full face (only a little bit of concealer, blush, and eye makeup).
If you’re feeling overwhelmed with everything in your life, maybe try out minimizing what’s in your living space. Maybe you don’t have to go as extreme as I have, but try it out and see if it works for you.
